a huge thank you from me to all of you who left such lovely and lifting comments on my last post. poor old silver passed away early last week.
we rallied, we gathered, we ate and drank we laughed and cried and then laughed again.
here he is off to the army
before shipping off to war he made the smartest decision of his lifetime and married my Nan
And this is them 70 years later
there is no doubt that we are our family.....and these beautiful souls are the head of mine
6 children, 23 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. Every single one of us where there to say our goodbyes. even the four who skyped in from America.
goodbye Alick....aka "Old Silver" and don't worry we will look after your Jo for you.
How lucky I am to have had my Pop as a constant in my life. For anyone still lucky to have grandparents around them....give them a call...write them a letter....ask them what there favourite colour is or what they remember best about their schooldays. Old Silvers favourite colour was red and his best times at school were when his teacher taught him how to smoke properly at the ripe old age of 11!
I`m getting back in the groove folks. the last of the family leave this weekend. Ive loved every minute of having the house full to the brim. I had a night out at the local last night with my brothers and my cousins....yep weve still got it!
I`ll be back soon....I have the treasure of all treasures to share with you!!
Al xx

Oh your Nan and Pop look like the most beautiful couple ... in both pictures.
ReplyDeleteGodspeed to Old Silver ... sounds like a life well lived ... and that's all any of us can really hope for.

ReplyDeleteAl, I loved reading this, it's made me very emotional. My grandparents all passed away when I was a kid, am envious of your relationship with yours, it's beautiful. So lovely for your kids too. Have been thinking of you a lot, can just imagine the fun you got up to last night and with a house full! Take good care of yourself, lots of love xx ps: Your granddad was a good sort, love those pix of him and his beautiful wife. I hope she'll be okay, God love her xx
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to read about Old Silver's passing Al.
ReplyDeleteI can tell he was a good bloke, from your words, and also by looking at him.
Sympathy to you and your family, and most especially Silver's Jo x
(she was a beautiful bride, just look at that headpiece - gorgeous)

ReplyDeleteOh my sweet love, I've been out of the loop for a week or so. I'm sorry to hear about your Pop. How precious though that he has such a loving and committed family to rally around him in his final days. I'm so glad to hear that you are all comforted in having family around. My big, big love to you darling and gentle squeezes. May your precious Pop rest in peace. X
Al, thinking of you dear girl. May 'Old Silver' shine on in your memory forever. The pics are beautiful, so much expression in your grandparents' eyes in the wedding photo, and again 70 years on.
ReplyDeleteIn recent weeks I've learned that within the grief of losing a special family member, some positives can emerge; family reunion and the comfort of being with those we don't see very often. As a family we siblings had become a bit lazy in making the effort to catch up more often, our excuses being "there is always next time". We've become much closer and we've learned a lot about one another in recent weeks - my 80 year old sister announced she is now a Quaker, and my 78 year old 'truckie' brother has become one of the latte-sipping set in his semi-retirement! Whodathoughtit!
Thinking of you and your family, Al.

oh al !!!! i am crying here my lovely! He looked WONDERFUL! gutted for you my angel xxxxx
ReplyDeleteAl, I'm so sorry I missed your previous post. Your grandfather sounds like a wonderful man, and I can tell how much you loved him. You're so blessed to have had him in your life. My grandfathers were very special to me too. One has been gone 53 years, and the other has been gone 47 years, and I still remember them as clearly as if I were with them yesterday. You'll treasure those memories as you get older, and you can tell stories about Old Silver to your children and grandchildren, so he'll live in their memories too.
ReplyDeleteAww, so sad Alison. I love how much you loved him. My grandparents have all been gone a while but there is rarely a day goes buy i dont think of them and the things we did and they taught me. Take care x
ReplyDeleteOh Allison, I'm thinking of you and I'm so sorry my lovely... sounds like you had an amazing relationship with your Pop xx. Sending you big hugs xoxox
ReplyDeleteOh Al. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Grandparents are seriously the best, they can shape so much of our lives and who we are. Your beloved Pop will surely live on in your heart and wonderful memories always but my thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Much love and light, Belinda xxxx
