garage sale therapy...

a crazy couple of months called for some serious therapy.....some serious vintage lovin therapy....some serious garage sale therapy....some say the best kind? hmmm maybe?!
so in the early hours the kidlets were dispatched to spend some "quality time" with Nics parents.
And although I vowed to never garage sale with my mum ever again....I gave her a reprieve and had her ride shotgun.
we had 5 on the list (which is a lot for our small town)....but that also meant that every other garage sale enthusiast (nutter/hoarder type) in town would also be hittin the big 5.
but hey a morning out cruising with your ma isn't to be sneezed at....so we took the "whatevs" approach and after a lot of digging and chatting and a bit more digging we managed to find some pre loved treasure that fitted the bill perfectly.
mum even managed to hold her tongue when I chose to pay 20c for the crappy old wind up baby doll....just wait and see...yep shes crappy but I have my reasons!!

2 of the 5 were estate sales which is always a bit gloomy and naturally when you work at the only Drs surgery in town you know the recently departed.
that isn't the problem, it just doesn't seem right to be seen walking out with armloads of treasure. well certainly not hootin n hollerin "what a bargain!"

one was just fishing rods....just rods....yep about 300 of them... apparently an online venture that went south ... and no I don't mean Victoria.

one was being run by dogs.....seriously we stopped and looked around and there was nobody to be founds just two mutleys and a sign....they had done well to lay some goodies out on a tarp but the butt sniffing no doubt turned more than one potential punter away....better luck next time boys.

the last and definitely least... a moving sale, and I wish the gentleman well in prison....I so wish that was a joke....but no. court is next week and its not lookin good.
much to mums horror I asked him what he had done.....you can blame my obsession with tv shows such as "locked up" and "death row" for that (and that im well...nosey!).....he calmly responded "ah ya know, this n that"....his ex missus ratted him out (see Im so cell block C ) for "growin"....by which I gather he meant marajawanna......or wacky tobacky as my dear ol pal Jo calls it.
mum was tootin the horn frantically by this stage and I kinda felt sorry for ol mate so had a peruse. I did find a pile of porn but it wasn't vintage so couldn't justify the purchase....come on we all know if that was vintage porn its ok to buy!.....pre 90`s??? whats a year or two?
so mum was relieved I made it back to the car alive and with my virginity in tact.
and she actually said...."you didn't tell him were you live did you?"......um yep mum im lookin for a new supplier so when hes out in 10 to 15 I told him to look me up!.sheesh!

ive taken some pics of my favourite finds....you know how I don't like to show off. so I spared you the pics of the kids toys and books and the old pushy that's still at mums....oh yeah pushy means bicycle for those not in the know....its not jail house code for anything untoward.

see...I told you.
wind up vintage baby doll is kinda creepy right? but you see my dear ol pal Janey has a thing for them....yep...hope you are high and dry Janey lol...cause here comes a close up!
she has a little key in her tummy to wind her up... someone scratched her eyes off....who would do such a thing?....i love the little bib around her neck.

the frocks!!...oh the frocks....if only this garage sale had of been at the beginning of October and I would have sent them all to my ol pal Kylie. her frocktober rocked socks!..she blew it outa the water.
oh well kyles looks like you will be donning frocks next year as well.....hint hint.

im seriously loving the long 70`s cream floral number but sadly its a size 8 which is currently the size of my upper arm.

the other two would be 10 - 12`s?
anyone interested just let me know and will donate proceeds to Kylies fund.....I`ll cop the postage.
make me an offer!.

we all love garage sales right?...the thrill of the thrift and we all love bringing home treasures for our littles....right?.....well I found this fab retro tin full of tea set fabulousness for Frankie. we all especially love the treasures that keep them occupied for an age...right?....well things were quiet for just a little too long and I was to find out why.....seems that there was also a tube of sad ol used up red lipstick in that tin.....yep there was!

oh yeah so funny ha ha.....laugh it up sista.

oh what fun, what therapy......im positively renewed....well until next week when the 4.30am rises and the 4000th request for something once more sends me feral.

my mum often asks "and what are you going to do with that?" (add sarcasm and disbelief as well please)
well mother I gaze upon them , I hold them, I photograph them and share them with my pals.
and that right there makes me feel good.

enjoy your weekends......stay cool (and out of jail, although I do promise to write if the need arises!)

go say hi to Max

  1. Haha the lipstick, or facestick in this case. that would have been fun to scrub off.
Garage sale-ing here is really hit and miss, more miss actually.
You've found some real treasure there Al. I'm liking the cream floral dress too, though sadly not a size 8 either, maybe a conversion into a maxi skirt..

  2. HA … thanks for the mention … and look at all the treasure you found.
You always manage to hit the vintage jackpot don't you. Sad to see no new Jesus amongst them … but hey you can't expect divine intervention every single time. That doll … eeewww … seriously creepy … I'm pretty sure it was only given to naughty boys and girls to try and scare them straight.

  3. You are a flipping hoot! Have I mentioned that before?? LOL Love the jail bird story. So funny. Your poor mum must have been freaking out. fancy asking him what he did?? Hahaha! That's such a me thing to do! Poor baby doll with scratched out eyes. She's cute except for the eyes. Maybe you could get her a pair of dark 1960's shades to wear. Those tins would've sent you and I into a tenny, tiny squabble but the retro cutlery! Oh man, I might have had to knock down old ladies and push through small children to get to those first. So cool! What a score you had this weekend. I'm so jealous ... I mean, happy for you;) x

  4. Oh my love you crack me, it sure must of been some therapy I can feel you bouncing off the walls with this post and your jokes. Just the post I needed to read after a trying day here. I would have had so much fun doing the garage sale rounds with you, but sad,y we would have got into a wrestle over that wee toy piano and the kiddie bits and pieces.

Frankie also mad me laugh big, I can only imagine your mummy's comments when she discovered you like that.......live it up sweetheart.

Big love to you. Still sending gentle healing hugs. Xxxxxxxx

  5. Oh Al, I really needed that laugh tonight. You are hilarious. And Frankie is gorgeous! That doll freaks me out but love the little piano. Your mum sounds just like mine, whenever I try to drag her into old stuff shops she says "I grew up with all of that, I don't need to see it again!" Enjoy the weekend xx

  7. I always love your posts. You have a wicked sense of humor that makes me literally laugh out loud every time. I can just picture you chatting up the pot grower and being slightly disappointed that he hadn't done something more sinister. Thanks for explaining the pushy thing. I would have gone the rest of my American life thinking you were talking about a two-wheeled scooter. You got some really cool stuff. I especially love the purse in the first photo and the little forks and spoons. And, yes, I DID wear my hair like the girl on the Big Ideas book, thank you very much. Frankie is the one who really cracked me up this time though. That lipstick face is priceless. Really? The WHOLE face? I love it!!!

  8. What a brilliant post, Al, you make me laugh! So much fab treasure too - your approach to the "but what are you going to do with it?" mirrors my own. Loving the no-eyes wind-up baby, the tins, the vanity case, and oh oh oh, the frockage! I adore them all! Would make you an offer but I fear they would be a tad small and I can't ask you to post to the UK (believe me, I know how madly expensive it is.)
Frankie's lippy looks like mine after a few cocktails too many... xxx

  11. LOL, loved your post...your Mum sounds like a hoot, I think she would get on well with mine. The wind up dollie was just the thing for halloween with those scary eyes. Love that handbag. You made me feel sorry for Peace and Love guy. So glad I found you. I'm now a new fan... :)

  13. Oh Lordy you had heaps of fun and got some FABULOUS goodies. I love the little piano and the very lovely cutlery, not to mention the fact that I NEED those pretty tins, and really just all of it. 14. The tea set bucket is tops. The lipstick face, well we had a similar one at our place this week. you know, it's a little too quiet and then suddenly there she is, face pancake white, lips smeared all over and a few strings of beads thrown on for good measure. Your girl looks as cheeky as mine I think. And you seriously went nuts. you obviously really needed to get out of the house! mel x

  15. Another funny one Al - although it's a rare post from you that doesn't have a bot of slapstick in it!
Speaking of comedians, little Frankie looks as though she's following in her Mum's footsteps - quite the card in those pics.
Thanks for the shout-out, very nice of you and I appreciate it.
What a magic haul - only 70's porn could've made it better.
    I love the little piano.
How much do you want for the first frock?

  16. Oh, Al, thanks for those tummy-wobbling laughs, and for sharing those fab finds - you really do have the knack. I've had practically no time to check out my fav blogs in the past couple of weeks, babysitting duties kept this ol' Nana on her toes leaving her too knackered to do anything but have early nights. After this latest toddler-sitting stint, I wonder how YOU find time to Op shop AND blog, it sure beats me.
I did get out on parole for one day - all on my own, with no ball 'n chain attached -and gave the Orange Op Shops a good working over. Will share once I get my strength back to do a blog post! x

  17. Far out, what an amazing haul! The baby piano is charming, and tins, pretty and useful. Frankie cracks me up, she looks like she laughs from sunrise to sundown-what a clown!
Yes, i'm a firm believer in op-shop curing many ills x
