what would you do??...

well?....what would you do if a dear friend sent you this pic with a caption that read....

"having a clean out of mums stuff...do you want any?"

you all know me pretty well by now so I know that you know what my response was.
well actually you would not have heard my response over the squeal of my tyres!!

sadly my friends mum passed away a month ago (that's her and hubby there on the wall).
it was garage sale time and this pic only shows one wall in the lounge room....Mrs W was a serious collector!
there were 186 brandy balloons.....yep 186!!

with shaky hands I chose a few pieces that spoke to me and although I could have walked out of there with a boot load I showed restraint and only chose some particular favourites.

oh that was hard...i wanted to give them all homes. im still quite shocked with what I left behind....maybe it was vintage overload.

there was a garage sale happening the next morning so I hope there was some very happy punters and that Mrs W`s treasures went to a lot of vintage loving homes.

the sun is shining and its warm enough for a picnic so we are outa here!
I`ll be back later to share what I adopted.
Al xx

  1. Like you, I wouldn't have wanted to sweep through the place taking everything in sight...but it would have been hard to show restraint. I can't wait to see what you got.

  5. What would I do? I'd likely pee myself.
Then seriously consider pieces in my favourite colours and combinations green, orange and yellow.

  7. What would I do? You ning-nong Al, you know I'd say "No thanks, I have enough stuff already" (OK, OK, my nose is growing and I have pimples on my tongue).
I really hope you'll tell us you got at least one of those fantabulous apple green B.B's from the top of that cupboard. x

  9. I love the old wedding photo.
    186 brandy balloons! Wow!
I have one. It's red and used to belong to Lucy Violet.
I think I like the blue ones best, but I reckon you chose orange (?)

  11. I bet their speaking to you only needed to be the faintest whisper! LOL How lovely of your friend to ask you over before the garage sale. I always find deceased estates bitter sweet. One part of my body is usually having heart palpitations due to the excitement the other feels really sad for the family and sad that all of the treasures of the person that has died are getting 'got rid' of. Can't wait to see which ones you brought home with you xx

  15. It's nice of your friend to ask you to look first, before the sale. It is bitter-sweet, as a commenter above said. Someone's beloved collections and treasures, put out to pasture... But hopefully snapped up and appreciated for a few more years yet by you and others.
I do love a bit of coloured vintage glassware, so I would have been tempted. Looking forward to seeing what you chose.
The wedding photo is beautiful. xxxx

  16. I WOULD HAVE PICKED A FEW THINGS AS YOU DID (THOSE GREEN ONES ON TOP PROBABY!) I DON'T KNOW AS I WOULD WANT TO JUST TAKE A WHOLE COLLECTION, ITS NOT REALLY A COLLECTION THEN AS THE CHASE IS PART OF THE COLLECTING XXX

  18. The wedding photo is so lovely, as is the photo you took showing the owner and her collection. It really makes it personal, more than just a collection of glassware. I recently cleared my mum's house out and actually, it is far nicer that the stuff goes to friends than strangers, so what a lovely win-win all round. Hope you got some real treasures. xx
